Civil war in Syria in USA today and MF Dnes. Comparative study

This diploma thesis is focused on war journalism and compares how the Czech daily Mlada fronta Dnes and American daily The New York Times inform about Syria civil war. In first theoretical part is introduced concept of journalism, process of news selection and agenda setting. Moreover war journalism, propaganda and historical development of war journalism are introduced. Following part brings concrete description of for theoretical bases which help form research questions. The quantitative analyse is chosen as a method of research. Research part of this work aims to discover masculine and feminine values in journalism. These values were former defined in Gina G. Barker study. Next part aims to connect three media roles by Daya Kishan Thussu a Des Friedman to chosen newspaper. Moreover the used sources of dailies are described. Research is focused on patriotism during inform about civil war as well. The last part brings the results of this research and comparison of journalism about Syrian civil war on the pages of Czech and American newspapers.

The limits of Czech journalism in covering the conflict in the Holy land demonstrated on the operation Cast Lead

The bachelor thesis entitled Limits of Czech Journalism in Covering the Conflict in the Holy Land, demonstrated on Operation Cast Lead deals primarily with the issue of the objectivity of Czech journalists and other issues that are connected with war repporting. These limits are shown on a particular conflict - the Gaza wars at the turn of 2008 and 2009, also known as Operation Cast Lead. The first, theoretical part, deals with the characteristics and specifics of the war news and some ethical principles. It further defines the role of the Czech Republic in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and in the last part deals with the history and present of disputes in the Holy Land. In the practical part, it is first described how the methodological procedure was used to fulfill the stated goal. The limits of Czech journalism are illustrated and examined in the case of two Czech journalists who worked as rapporteurs in the Middle East, Jakub Szántó and Břetislav Tureček. The research includes interviews with both and their interpretations and a qualitative analysis of journalists' contributions to the media during Operation Cast Lead, which is finally summed up.

Embedding the approach to war reporting

In this bachelor thesis called Embedding the approach to war reporting I would like to bring coherent material about embedding. The first part of the text will cover the historical setting of embedding in context. It roots into the ancient times and through World War I. or Vietnam War the text terminates with Ukrainan crisis. Another part of the work will bring information about objectivity whether embedding shows complete and comlex reporting. If is it true that journalist, who spent a time with troops, will be affected by the troops, thus the objectivity will turn up a dilemma.. In the bachelors thesis I would like to present principle of journalist ethics, which are usefull for being in a conflict or crisis situation. The legislation is also part of the text and it is connected with rules, which have to be followed by embed. These rules are part of the bigger concept of ISAF organization. Another part of my bachelor thesis involves an attitude of Czech army and shows how Czech system works. In the practical part of the work I will publish the transcript of three interviews with journalists like František Šulc, Michal Kubal and Teodor Marjanovič. Purpose of epicentrum agency and marketpace for a new agency after its closure

This thesis recapitulates activities of Epicentrum agency which was reporting from the crisis places in the world and due to its termination of activities it attempts to define the meaning of Epicentrum. There is no doubt that Epicentrum was unique, but the important thing is to understand the causes and circumstances of its establishment and actions and to describe the way Epicentrum worked, including the both positive and negative aspects. Since the days of Epicentrum the world of media has changed fundametally (although it has not been that long). There is the phenomenon of media internetisation which the traditional media do not know how to deal with. Consequences of digitization have meant significant changes in journalists' work and the theme of this thesis is how could similar agency operate in these days. Today the proccess of producing the reports from the field is faster and cheaper which is advantage, on the other hand it is much easier to gather the large amount information for free these days and it is hard to convince media to buy it from such an agency. Therefore the integral part of this work is also a reflection on the value of on-the-spot reporting and its subsequent application possibilities on the market.

Comparison of coverage of the war conflicts in Yemen and Syria by Czech media

The diploma thesis Comparation of the coverage of war conflicts in Yemen and Syria by the Czech media examines to what extent and in what way two wars, which have been going on for several years and are among the biggest humanitarian crises of the present, are reflected in selected media. The conflicts under investigation are the war in Syria and the war in Yemen. The aim of the thesis was to prove that although the two wars are comparable in many aspects, there is a considerable difference between their media coverage. The theoretical part summarizes and defines important concepts accompanying news and news selection and their impact, the role of the media in war and other concepts such as ideology or propaganda. The research part examines the individual reports of three selected news sites, which are Aktuálně.cz, Novinky.cz and iDnes.cz. Based on four theoretical bases, the variables in media content of selected media were investigated. Based on the analysis it was found that the Syrian conflict in the media space gets much more attention than the Yemeni conflict. Furthermore, it was found that while the war in Syria is most often put into the context of the actions of state actors, the most common theme of the reports on the war in Yemen is the development of the conflict. Framing of news photography in the czech press on the example of the civil war in Libya

The thesis Framing of News Photography in the Czech Press on the Example of the Civil War in Libya explores the visual coverage of the conflict by Czech print media. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with the theory of framing. It also focuses on the role of media in armed conflicts, visual behavior of media, the specifics of war photography and its framing. Furthermore the thesis explores the important relationship between image and text. The research draws on extensive literature on media framing as well as foreign research and combines quantitative and qualitative analysis. The practical part is based on the theory of Johan Galtung and his concepts of war and peace journalism, which can be seen as two competing frames. One of the first visual quantitative analysis to apply Galtung's theory was carried out by Shahira Fahmy and Rico Neumann. This study was used as a basis for the thesis. The aim of the research was to determine what visual frames are used to cover the war in the Czech press. Quantitative research focused on three sets of characteristics - picture position and sources, content and formal elements and framing. "Selected aspects of the war news on the example of the war in Croatia

Thesis "Selected aspects of the war news in Czech daily newspapers on the example of the war in Croatia" analyze approach Czech printed media to reporting on the war in Croatia. This work verifies the existence of selected journalistic routines, using by journalists when they reporting on military conflicts, that was emerged from the study of foreign research, through quantitative analysis of the front pages of Mladá fronta Dnes and Rudé právo from the years 1991 to 1995. The theoretical part of this thesis is devoted to news reporting, with an emphasis on the sociology of sources, then composes the theory of framing and finally assesses the role of the media in military conflicts. The practical part is a research project based on foreign research that evaluates the use of sources in war reporting and processes the anchoring of themes of conflict in Croatia with the use of quantitative analytical methods. The aim of the research is to obtain results related to the issue of informing the Czech media about the war, and their subsequent comparison with results of foreign researches on the issue of reporting on wars.
